Powerade Challenge
Custom Adobe AIR apps and Arduino/RFID integration inside Powerade vending machines for a timed waterfront running course in Auckland.
The Challenge
Powerade (Coca-Cola) wanted a waterfront training route that felt like a real challenge — timed, competitive, and tied to the product — not just another branded run. The answer was the Powerade Challenge: turn Auckland’s popular Tamaki Drive loop into a tech-enabled course where runners checked in at specially equipped Powerade vending machines, got automatic timings, and chased leaderboard places and weekly prizes.
The course was a 9 km loop starting and finishing near the Auckland Ferry Terminal. It opened around early July 2011 for roughly two months. Runners could repeat it to improve their times. Adshels, billboards, and pavement media supported the route; results showed on a digital billboard and a campaign site with leaderboards, personal profiles, training tips, and content from All Blacks conditioning coach Dr Nic Gill.
Client & collaborators
Creative concept came from Naked Communications. Ogilvy was Coca-Cola’s agency. Ikon scouted the course route. Technology research, coordination, and development sat with Satellite Media, where I worked as Senior Developer on the AIR/Arduino stack inside the machines.
How it worked
Runners registered online and received an RFID bracelet by post — capped at roughly 3,000 because each unit cost about $4–5. On the course they scanned at three Powerade vending machines. Times were captured automatically and uploaded to a central system that refreshed the live digital billboard and the campaign website.
The product interaction was literal: the vending machines were both timing stations and brand touchpoints, so the hardware and software had to survive outdoor use, handle registration and scanning reliably, and push data upstream without breaking the runner flow.
Constraints
- Custom Adobe AIR applications running inside commercial vending machines — not a desktop or web-only deploy.
- Arduino hardware in the machines that had to talk cleanly to the AIR layer for RFID registration, scanning, and timing.
- RFID bracelet logistics and unit cost that capped participation volume.
- Realtime (or near-realtime) data path from machine → master system → digital billboard and website leaderboards/profiles.
- Outdoor, multi-month activation with repeated runs and weekly prize cadence — reliability mattered as much as the demo.
Contributions
- Built the vending-machine AIR apps — developed the custom Adobe AIR applications installed in the Powerade machines for the live Auckland course.
- Wired AIR to Arduino — interfaced the apps with Arduino hardware inside the machines so RFID bracelet registration and scanning drove the timing flow.
- Captured and uploaded race timings — handled timing capture in-app and sent results to the central master system that updated the digital billboard and campaign website.
Outcomes
The Powerade Challenge was an early New Zealand example of blending out-of-home media, RFID tracking, custom Arduino hardware, and real product interaction into one experiential campaign. It won Silver at the 2011 Digital Media Awards (Media Innovation) and performed strongly enough that the challenge returned in later years — including a 2012 Wellington expansion with Olympic athlete benchmarks — with related iterations earning Gold at the CAANZ Media Awards and Spikes Asia recognition.
